                 Titan Submarine Accident

  • 5 people sat in a submarine called Titan and dove into the sea to see the wreck of the Titanic. It took 2 hours to reach the depth of 3,810 meters and it sent a signal to the support ship on the surface of the sea.
  • On 18th June, after 1 hour and 45 minutes of dive, the submarine loses contact with the support ship on the sea and goes missing. A 4-day-long multinational search is carried out to find the submarine.

  • The Titan Submersible disappeared in the Atlantic Ocean near Canada. It was not a submarine, but a submersible, and a support ship was needed to launch it into the water and for it to come back.

  • Stockton Rush founded a company called OceanGate, whose purpose was to take rich people on deep sea expeditions as tourism.
  • Ocean Gate had two other submersibles, Antipodes and Cyclops, but Titan could go down 4,000 m. 4 km underwater.
  • The Washington Post created a chart to show the frightening depth of 3,800 m, which is several times the height of a man. After 650 feet, a twilight zone area starts, 1,600 feet is the depth of the deepest-ever underwater rescue operation conducted to date, and 2,600 feet is giant squid habitat.
  • The pressure at this depth is 400 times that on the surface, so the window in the Titan submersible had to be big.
  • The Titan submersible had a capacity of 5 people and a total length of 6.7 meters. It weighed more than 10,400 kg and had four electric thrusters outside.
  • This submarine was controlled by a video game controller. The pilot was also using a video game controller to operate the submersible.
  • There were no seats to sit inside, and the toilet was beside the viewport. The person using the toilet had to face the other way.
  • Because the submersibles go so deep into the water, the GPS doesn't work, so they communicate with their support ship through text messaging.
  • Hamish Harding, a British billionaire, was on board this submersible that day. He was an adventurer and a 3-time Guinness World Record holder.
  • The third and fourth passengers were a British-Pakistani businessman and his 19-year-old son. They went with their father to please him.
  • The submersible was communicating with the support ship at every 15-minute interval, but the communication stopped at 11:15 AM. The passengers could tilt the submersible from inside and push it back and forth to bring it back up by removing the ballasts.
  • The US Coast Guard was notified at 7:10 PM when the Titan did not resurface, and began the great race against time to find the passengers alive.
  • Titan had no emergency locator, and there was no way to open the submersible from the inside. The search area was 25,000 km, and the deepest underwater rescue that has been done so far was only done till the depth of 480 meters underwater in 1973.

  • Two American and two Canadian aircraft started this operation, three ships started searching from the surface, and then more ships started coming in for the search operation. Three remotely operated vehicles were searching for Titan.
  • After 3 days of searching, a sonar from a Canadian aircraft heard some banging noises. Later, the US Coast Guard confirmed that the banging noises had nothing to do with the Titan submersible.
  • You might be thinking that Implosion means bursting, but it is the opposite of an explosion. A catastrophic implosion means that the entire structure was destroyed in the blink of an eye.
  • The main body of the Titan was made of carbon fibre, but it was an experimental design. Carbon fibre is not a suitable material for this use case.
  • Ocean explorer Robert Ballard said that he has done thousands of dives in different vehicles to get to the bottom of the ocean, but he has never lost a vehicle.
  • James Cameron has been to the deep sea many times and said that the main body of carbon fibre is now scattered in pieces.
  • In interviews, OceanGate company's CEO has said that the US Passenger Vessel Safety Act of 1993 is useless and that there is no need to pay so much attention to safety.
  • At some point, safety is just pure waste, and if you want to be safe, don't do anything.
  • Stockton Rush knew that his experiment could be dangerous, but OceanGate refused to conduct a safety assessment and certification. The legal battle was eventually settled later in 2018.
  • 36 people wrote a letter to Stockton Rush, saying that his experimental approach to deep sea exploration was putting himself and his clients in danger.
  • Rush was accused of repeating the phrase "She is unsinkable" in the race to reach the Titanic, but the ship sank.
